DO NOT be Taken for a Ride!

Ignorance may be bliss according to the old adage, but it can also be very costly-especially when it comes to your car. What could be more irritating than being told by your auto mechanic that you need a new transmission, when all you thought you required was a simple oil change? Well, who are you to know anything about how a car works? How can you argue? Many an unscrupulous auto mechanic point to the ‘check engine’ light, which is an indicator of potential trouble that requires an expensive outlay of cash. More about the ‘check engine’ light just below. Unfortunately, far too many of us get scammed by unethical mechanics.

ABC News’ 20/20 recently interviewed ‘Joe’, who revealed the ‘tricks of the trade’ of the auto repair shop business. Joe ought to know, after 40 years of service in the industry. Joe cautions consumers to be knowledgeable about the workings of an automobile, so as to avoid getting ripped off. According to Joe, there are unethical mechanics who can attempt to liberate customers out of more cash than is necessary. This often unnecessary surcharge is due to the relatively low profit margin at many repair shops. Many otherwise honest mechanics are coerced by their bosses to undertake and charge for unnecessary work. Joe is ashamed to admit that he himself has been guilty of the practice. 20/20 went underground around the NYC area to see if mechanics would demand extra fees for unnecessary repairs. There are special terms that are employed by mechanics for questionable repairs. Here are just a few of them:

GRAVY WORK…This involves charging a customer for more time for a job that normally would need far less time.

WALLET FLUSH…This ‘technique’ for your cash involves a simple oil change that ends up being more costly, as now you are told you need power steering flushes, as well as other sundry costly fluids. Hence the term ‘flush’.

THE IDIOT LIGHT… This remains one of the most lucrative means of scalping the unwary customer. Unethical mechanics will exploit the naïve customer’s concerns about the so-called idiot light which is the ‘check engine’ light. The check engine light will invariably indicate a failure code which translates into supposed defective parts needing expensive repairs and replacements. 20/20 actually put the idiot light ‘maneuver’ to the test, with various results-some rather surprising.

It would behoove every car owner to become familiar with the basic workings of their car. It is also important to have a good working relationship with your auto mechanic at a reputable shop. Consumers’ Choice Award is your guarantee of professional and ethical car service.
