While it may not be the most popular or commercial holiday, Earth Day gives us the wonderful chance to raise awareness about our environment and develop ways to protect it. Beginning on April 22, 1970 and later designated as International Mother Earth Day by the United Nations in 2009, Earth Day is now celebrated in over 192 countries. Whether you are by yourself or part or a larger organized group, any activity meant to protect the environment on Earth Day is dedicated to a good cause: having a safer environment for future generations. If you would like to celebrate Earth Day today but are undecided on how to do so, consider these simple, but effective Earth Day celebrations.

Plant a tree

Perhaps the most traditional Earth Day celebration, planting a tree symbolizes all that Earth Day is trying to accomplish. As long as everyone chips in, protecting the environment is not an overwhelming task. Planting a tree both keeps the planet healthy by lowering greenhouse emissions and providing a habit for animals, and demonstrates the teamwork needed to protect the environment.

Pick up litter in a park

Though parks are usually maintained by local governments, there is always the opportunity to help out by picking up trash. A clean park is safer for children when they are playing, and doing so can be a good opportunity to teach them how to help protect the environment and why it's important.

Make a bird feeder

Always a fun activity that makes for a nice decoration for the backyard, making will a bird feeder is both easy to do and helpful for local birds. They will invite chirping birds to your backyard by offering a healthy snack and serve as a constant reminder of the principles of Earth Day.

Celebrating Earth Day today is the first step to making environmental-conscious decisions everyday. The whole idea of Earth Day is to help out in anyway you can, even if it means recycling more or turning off the water while you brush your teeth. Any help is appreciated both by current and future generations, as you'll be protecting the environment for our children and our children's children.
